Who does AI recommend for craft breweries in Glasgow? We asked.

45% of consumers now ask AI assistants for local business recommendations — up from 6% a year ago (BrightLocal, 2026). Glasgow has brewed for centuries — Tennent's Wellpark Brewery, Scotland's oldest commercial brewery, has stood in the East End since 1556 — and a genuine small-brewery scene sits alongside it today. So we put six real buyer questions to Claude cold and checked them against live AI-search evidence. The real independents are genuinely good. The bigger finding was two of the most commonly recommended "craft beer" venues in the city — a BrewDog bar and Innis & Gunn's West End taproom — quietly closed in March 2026, in an industry shake-up that happened after our own training cutoff, and that some guides still haven't caught up with.
Method
On 10 September 2026 we asked six questions someone actually choosing where to drink or visit a brewery in Glasgow might ask. Each was put to Claude (Anthropic), answering cold — no briefing, no search, trained knowledge only, with a cutoff in January 2026 — and then checked against live AI-search evidence: the pages, guides and listings that search-connected assistants actually draw their answers from today.
AI answers vary between runs and between assistants — this is one dated snapshot, not a fixed ranking. We're only claiming what we actually did: we queried Claude directly, and separately checked live web search for the same six questions. We are not claiming to have run ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot directly this time, and we don't quote an engine we didn't actually query.
The six questions
For each, here's what Claude said cold, then what live AI-search evidence adds.
Q1
"What are the best independent craft breweries in Glasgow?"
Claude · cold, no search"I'm fairly confident about WEST Brewery at Glasgow Green, brewing German-style beer in the old Templeton carpet factory, and Drygate near the Necropolis — though Drygate is a joint venture with Williams Bros and C&C Group, the company that owns Tennent's, so I wouldn't call it fully independent despite the craft branding. I believe Williams Bros' own brewery is actually in Alloa, not Glasgow itself. Beyond that I'm less confident placing other names precisely within the city."
Live AI-search evidenceWEST confirmed as genuinely independent, brewing on site at Glasgow Green. Shilling Brewing Company also surfaces strongly — a city-centre brewpub in a former 1930s bank on West George Street, brewing its own beer (Machine Gun Lager, Unicorn IPA, Glasgow Red) in full view of the bar. Alongside them, the same guides list Williams Bros (confirmed: brewery is in Kelliebank, Alloa, over 20 miles away) and Kelburn Brewing Co, whose address is Barrhead, East Renfrewshire — about 8 miles from the city centre, though its postcode, G78, is a Glasgow one.
Verdict: cold recall's hedge on Drygate held up exactly. Live search adds two genuinely independent, brewing-on-site Glasgow venues — and repeats the pattern of nearby towns being folded into "Glasgow" guides, some via a shared postcode area rather than the city boundary itself.

"Where can I do a brewery tour in Glasgow?"

Live AI-search evidenceTennent's Wellpark does rank top, with daily tours through Scotland's oldest commercial brewery. Drygate's Sunday tours (1pm, 3pm, 5pm) also surface. But so does Shilling Brewing Co's "grain to glass" tour of its own on-site kit — a genuine small independent operation that cold recall had no knowledge of at all.
Verdict: a clean example of live search filling in a real gap. Cold recall named the big, obvious options; it took live search to surface the smaller genuine independent running the same kind of tour.

"Is BrewDog a small independent Scottish brewery?"
Claude · cold, no search"By my most recent knowledge, no — BrewDog was founded in Fraserburgh in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie and grew into a large multi-national chain of over 100 bars, taking a minority investment from the US private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners in 2017. The founders still held a controlling stake as far as I know. I have no information past my training cutoff in January 2026."
Live AI-search evidenceConsiderably more has happened since. On 2 March 2026, Tilray Brands — a US cannabis and beverage company — acquired BrewDog's global brand, intellectual property, UK brewing operations and 11 "strategic" brewpubs for £33m. The other 38 UK bars, not included in the deal, closed immediately, with 484 redundancies. Both of Glasgow's BrewDog bars, in Merchant City and at Kelvingrove, were among the closures — Glasgow currently has no open BrewDog venue at all.
Verdict: cold recall's "no" was correct as far as it went, and honestly bounded by its own cutoff. Live search reveals the picture has moved much further since — from "not really independent" to "not currently operating in this city."

"Recommend a craft beer taproom in Glasgow's West End"

Live AI-search evidenceIt closed on 6 March 2026 — "long-term closed, seeking new tenants" — after Innis & Gunn went into administration and C&C Group, the company that owns Tennent's, bought the brand and intellectual property for £4.5m. 105 staff lost their jobs across Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee pubs and the Perth brewery. Several bar-listing and events sites, at the time of this search, still show the Ashton Lane taproom as an open, bookable venue.
Verdict: the sharpest finding of the six. Cold recall correctly flagged its own limit rather than guessing wrong. But live search shows the listings problem isn't only an AI one — some of the human-run guides AI reads from haven't caught up either.

"Is Overtone Brewing Co still open in Glasgow?"

Live AI-search evidenceOvertone, founded in Yoker in 2018 by Bowei Wang and Dan Miller, was issued a compulsory wind-up order on 13 February 2026 after its debts became unsustainable. It was then bought out of liquidation by Inn House Brewery Company, a Glasgow homebrew-supplies business trading for more than 40 years, whose stated intention is to keep the brewery and brand operating. As of this search, it appears to be trading again under its new owner.
Verdict: cold recall's honesty was the right call on a name it genuinely didn't have confident detail on. Live search found a real story — a brewery's near-collapse and rescue — that's exactly the kind of thing a snapshot from before February 2026 would have no way of knowing.

"Who actually brews Drygate's beer — is it independent?"

Live AI-search evidenceConfirmed and specific: C&C Group holds 49%, Williams Bros 40%, and staff the remaining 11%. Drygate was founded in 2014 and sits directly next to Tennent's own Wellpark Brewery — Scotland's oldest commercial brewery — in Glasgow's East End.
Verdict: a rare case where cold recall's structural detail was already accurate. Live search mainly adds the exact percentages and confirms Drygate's literal next-door relationship to the brewery whose owner holds the largest stake in it.

The pattern
Across all six questions, the gap wasn't geography or category — it was time.
Our York butchers report found real independents stretched in from up to 30 miles outside the city. Our Cardiff florists report found genuine local shops sitting undifferentiated next to nationwide letterbox brands. Glasgow's breweries show a third kind of gap: two of the venues that "best craft beer in Glasgow" guides most reliably name — a BrewDog bar and Innis & Gunn's West End taproom — physically closed in March 2026, and Claude's own cold recall, with a January 2026 training cutoff, simply predates both events. That's an honest, structural limit, not an error — but live AI-search evidence should have closed the gap, and in places it hasn't: some of the listings and events pages the search results still surface describe the Ashton Lane taproom as open and bookable, six months after it shut.
The wider story behind both closures is the same one: consolidation. Tilray, a US cannabis and beverage company, bought BrewDog's brand and UK brewing operations for £33m and closed 38 bars overnight. C&C Group — which already owns Tennent's, and which owns 49% of Drygate — bought Innis & Gunn's name out of administration for £4.5m. Two of Glasgow's most nationally famous "craft" names are now owned, in whole or in part, by the same handful of large drinks and consumer groups that dominate the mass market. Meanwhile Overtone, a genuinely small independent, nearly disappeared entirely in February and was kept alive by a local homebrew supplier stepping in.
None of this is any single business's fault, and it isn't a reason to avoid any of the venues named here — Drygate, under its current ownership, still brews real beer on a real site next to the Necropolis, and BrewDog's surviving 11 brewpubs elsewhere in the UK are still open under Tilray. The finding is narrower and more useful than that: in a fast-moving industry, both a cold AI's memory and a live search result can be confidently, specifically wrong about whether the door is open today — and the businesses actually brewing on site in Glasgow right now, WEST, Shilling and a rescued Overtone, are the ones worth checking are still exactly that before you go.
