Who does AI recommend for independent bookshops in Edinburgh? We asked.

Edinburgh has one of the strongest independent bookshop scenes in the UK, so we put six real buyer questions to Claude cold and checked them against live AI-search evidence. The genuine independents held up well — but the sharpest finding wasn't a business AI missed. It was one AI search still recommends: a shop several current bookshop guides call "independent" four years after it was bought by Waterstones.
Method
On 1 September 2026 we asked six questions someone actually choosing a bookshop in Edinburgh might ask. Each was put to Claude (Anthropic), answering cold — no briefing, no search, trained knowledge only — and then checked against live AI-search evidence: the pages, guides and listings that search-connected assistants actually draw their answers from today.
AI answers vary between runs and between assistants — this is one dated snapshot, not a fixed ranking. We're only claiming what we actually did: we queried Claude directly, and separately checked live web search for the same six questions. We are not claiming to have run ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot directly this time, and we don't quote an engine we didn't actually query.

"What are the best independent bookshops in Edinburgh?"
Claude · cold, no search"I'd lead with Golden Hare Books in Stockbridge — it won the UK's Independent Bookshop of the Year award, and I recall that being back in 2019. I'd also mention The Edinburgh Bookshop in Bruntsfield and Topping & Company on Blenheim Place, though Topping is really a small family-run group with branches in Bath, Ely and St Andrews too, not a single independent shop. I don't have confident, current knowledge of what's opened most recently or who holds the title now."
Live AI-search evidenceThe reigning UK Independent Bookshop of the Year for 2026 (British Book Awards) is Book Lovers Bookshop on Melville Terrace — a bright-pink shop, the UK's first bricks-and-mortar store dedicated to romance fiction, opened in 2024 after a Crowdfunder campaign by founder Caden Armstrong. Current guides (Time Out, The Scotsman, Whatshotblog) also name Argonaut Books, Lighthouse Bookshop, The Cookbook Shop (Scotland's only dedicated culinary bookshop, opened early 2026) and Portobello Bookshop alongside Golden Hare and Armchair Books.
Verdict: cold recall's "best" pick was the reigning champion from 2019 — a real, still-excellent shop, but seven years out of date on the actual title. The current UK Independent Bookshop of the Year didn't exist when that knowledge was formed.

I'd also mention Armchair Books in West Port for a lower-key, stacked-to-the-ceiling secondhand shop, though I couldn't describe either one's current stock or hours with any confidence."
Live AI-search evidenceMcNaughtan's checks out in detail: founded 1957, still trading from the same basement shop on Leith Walk, with a special interest in pre-1800 books and an art gallery added in 2010. Armchair Books is confirmed too, and live search adds a specific cluster: Edinburgh Books, "Edinburgh's largest second-hand bookshop", sits a few doors along in West Port with four basement rooms of stock, plus Tills Bookshop and The Gently Mad as further options.
Verdict: cold recall's headline name held up, but live search reveals West Port as a genuine two-shop cluster (Armchair Books and Edinburgh Books) — a detail that turns one good answer into a worthwhile afternoon.

Golden Hare's back room is a dedicated children's reading nook hosting Sunday Stories, a monthly reading club. But the plainest answer to this exact question is a shop cold recall never mentioned: Ginger & Pickles on St Stephen Street, Stockbridge — a small indie stocking nothing but children's and young-adult books, running events with local primary schools.
Verdict: cold recall named two good general bookshops with children's sections. It missed the one shop built for exactly this question — a gap live search closed instantly.

Live AI-search evidenceEdinburgh Books has a dedicated "Scottish Room" of secondhand fiction and nonfiction, including Walter Scott and Robert Burns. Tills Bookshop and McNaughtan's both carry Scottish-interest stock. The Scottish Poetry Library, near the Royal Mile, is confirmed — but it's a charitable literature organisation with a shop attached, not a straightforward commercial bookshop, even though general "best bookshop" roundups list it as one.
Verdict: a genuinely useful answer, but one worth reading carefully — a library's shop and an independent retailer are different things, and the AI-search results blur that line without flagging it.

"Is Blackwell's on South Bridge an independent bookshop?"

Blackwell's had been a family-owned business since the 1800s before that sale, and it kept trading under its own name afterwards, so it can look independent on the shopfront. But the company behind it today is Waterstones, which is itself owned by Elliott Advisors, a hedge fund that also owns Barnes & Noble in the US."
Live AI-search evidenceConfirmed in detail: Waterstones bought the 18-store Blackwell's chain for an undisclosed sum in February 2022, funded via Elliott Advisors. All Blackwell's staff were retained and the shop kept trading under its own name and branding on South Bridge, where it's been selling books since 1848. But several current bookshop guides and directory listings — the kind of page live AI-search draws its answers from — still describe Blackwell's Edinburgh as one of the city's "oldest independent bookshops", with no mention of the 2022 sale anywhere in the listing.
Verdict: the sharpest finding in this report. Cold recall, working from public 2022 coverage, got the ownership right without being asked twice. Live AI-search — reading current guides that never updated the word "independent" after the sale — would happily repeat the stale label back to anyone who asked.

Live AI-search evidenceTopping & Company runs a year-round, in-house "Literary Festival" of events across its three-floor Blenheim Place shop, with named upcoming dates including Sebastian Barry (10 September 2026), Rebecca F. Kuang (15 September) and Marlon James (21 September). Golden Hare's annual fixtures are the Book Fringe in August and the Radical Book Fair in November. Portobello Bookshop also runs a regular programme of launches and signings, listed on its own site.
Verdict: cold recall named the right venue but had none of the substance. Live search supplied exactly what turns "they do events" into something you could actually book a ticket for — real authors, real dates.

The pattern

Cold AI recall was, if anything, too cautious about its own gaps — but where it did name names, it was honest and mostly right on the shops that have been Edinburgh fixtures for years (McNaughtan's, The Edinburgh Bookshop, Topping & Company). What it consistently missed was anything recent: the current UK Independent Bookshop of the Year, a shop built specifically for children that didn't come up under a general children's-bookshop question, and any real detail on events beyond a venue name.
Live search filled almost all of those gaps well — but it doesn't police the word "independent" itself. Several current bookshop guides, the exact pages live AI-search reads to answer "best independent bookshop in Edinburgh", still describe Blackwell's on South Bridge as independent, four years after Waterstones bought it. Nothing in the listing text flags the ownership change; the shop kept its name, its address and its 1848 opening date, and that was apparently enough. It's a quieter version of the plumbing company's electrician page from our Sheffield report — not a fabricated business, a real and historic one, just no longer what the label says it is.
The genuine independents, meanwhile, cover real range: a UK-first romance specialist, a Scotland's-oldest antiquarian shop, a children's-only shop, a queer-owned community bookshop, and a family business with its own in-house festival. All of them are exactly the kind of shop the word "independent" is supposed to mean.

What this means if it's your business
If you're an independent retailer, this report is the test worth running on yourself: search the plain version of your own category and town, and check whether AI-search results correctly distinguish genuinely independent businesses from chain-owned ones trading under a legacy name.
