Who does AI recommend for independent butchers in York? We asked.

45% of consumers now ask AI assistants for local business recommendations — up from 6% a year ago (BrightLocal, 2026). York has butchery in its bones — the Shambles was literally "the Great Flesh Shambles" for centuries — so we put six real buyer questions to Claude cold and checked them against live AI-search evidence. The real independents held up well once we found them. Getting there was the story: a first search blurred York, UK with three unrelated American towns called York, and later searches kept folding in real, good butchers based 15 to 30 miles outside the city without ever saying so.
Method
On 6 September 2026 we asked six questions someone actually choosing a butcher in York might ask. Each was put to Claude (Anthropic), answering cold — no briefing, no search, trained knowledge only — and then checked against live AI-search evidence: the pages, guides and listings that search-connected assistants actually draw their answers from today.
AI answers vary between runs and between assistants — this is one dated snapshot, not a fixed ranking. We're only claiming what we actually did: we queried Claude directly, and separately checked live web search for the same six questions. We are not claiming to have run ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot directly this time, and we don't quote an engine we didn't actually query.

For each, here's what Claude said cold, then what live AI-search evidence adds.

"What are the best independent butchers in York?"
Claude · cold, no search"I don't have confident, specific knowledge of individual butcher shops trading in York today. I know the Shambles was historically called the 'Great Flesh Shambles' — a street of working butchers going back centuries — but I couldn't name a single business actually there now with any real confidence. I'd rather say that than guess."
Live AI-search evidenceA plain search returns a genuinely confusing mix: alongside real York, UK results, aggregator listings also surface butchers in York, Pennsylvania; York, Maine; and York, South Carolina — the shared town name causes real confusion. Filtering to the UK, the names that hold up are M&K Quality Butchers on Bishopthorpe Road and Swain Family Butchers on the Shambles. Two more names in the same "best of York" lists — A V Fawcett & Sons and Gledhill Butchers — turn out to be based in Driffield and Wakefield, 30 and 25 miles away respectively.
Verdict: cold recall's honesty was the right call — an admitted gap beats a guess. Live search's problem here wasn't the quality of the businesses, it was geography: one search conflated a UK cathedral city with three unrelated American towns, then a second stretched "York" to cover shops a 40-minute drive away.

Live AI-search evidenceSwain Family Butchers on the Shambles is named specifically for 21-day matured beef steaks, run by David Swain, the latest generation of a family that's worked in butchery for decades. The other name that surfaces under "dry-aged Yorkshire beef" is Fodder's butchery counter and its "newly-installed meat dry ager" — but Fodder is at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, roughly 21 miles from York, not in the city itself.
Verdict: Swain's is the real York answer. Fodder's is good meat, just not a York answer to a York question — the search again treating "in Yorkshire" as close enough to "in York".

Verdict: a clean example of cold recall's real failure mode — not inventing a business, but misplacing a real one. Someone acting on that memory alone could drive to the wrong city for their Sunday joint.

The building itself has housed a butcher for almost 140 years, since 1876, and the shop's been named York's Best Butcher by the local paper, The Press.
Verdict: the gap here is total, not partial. Cold recall had nothing at all, and live search had a specific, well-documented, still-trading, three-generation business with an address and a 150-year-old shopfront behind it.

The pie that keeps winning national awards, though, is Thorntons Bakehouse and Butchers' Traditional Pork Pie — a British Pie Awards hat-trick in 2020, then two stars at the Great Taste Awards in 2024 — but Thorntons bakes it in Easingwold, 13 miles north of York, not in the city itself.
Verdict: real specialists, correctly named — just be clear-eyed that the single most decorated pie in the results isn't actually baked inside the city you searched for.

"Is Farmison & Co, the online 'Yorkshire' butcher, still trading?"

Live AI-search evidenceIt went into administration on 6 April 2024, after a £2.6m loss on £11.9m turnover in 2021 and a £3.4m loss on £10.5m turnover in 2022. Administrators FRP Advisory reported 199 unsecured creditors — including around a dozen rare-breed farmers — left £7.3m out of pocket. Less than three weeks later it was bought out of administration by investors led by former Asda chief executive Andy Clarke, and it's trading again today under new ownership.
Verdict: cold recall's vague unease was justified but badly out of date — it had no way of knowing the business had since failed, paid creditors short, and been relaunched. For a shopper weighing an online "Yorkshire" brand against an actual York shop, that whole history matters, and only live search had it.

The pattern
Across all six questions, cold recall had one honest strength and live search had a consistent, specific blind spot.
The strength: cold recall never invented a business. Faced with a category it genuinely didn't know, it said so five times out of six — the one exception being a hazy, hedged guess about Fodder's location, which turned out to be wrong but was offered as a guess, not a fact. The blind spot: live search's very first pass conflated York, UK with three separate American towns sharing the name, a reminder that place-name collisions are a real failure mode for AI-search, not just a quirk of one query.
This report's distortion runs the opposite direction from our Manchester bakeries piece. There, a national chain hid inside "best of" guides by looking exactly like a local independent. Here, real, close, thoroughly independent businesses — a butcher in Driffield, one in Wakefield, an award-winning bakehouse in Easingwold — get folded into "best butchers in York" results without the distance from York ever being flagged. Fifteen, twenty-five, thirty miles away is a genuinely different business trip, and none of the listings we checked said so. The Farmison & Co question added a third failure mode entirely: a business whose "Yorkshire" branding has nothing to do with a physical shop in Yorkshire at all, and whose very public 2024 collapse and rescue is exactly the kind of fast-moving fact that only live search — not a trained model's memory — can be expected to have current.
The genuine York independents, once you filter for all three, are exactly what you'd hope: a 1970s family shop with a 150-year-old shopfront, a Shambles butcher on 21-day-aged beef, two pie-and-sausage specialists a few doors from each other on the city's most famous street.
