Who does AI recommend for independent comic shops in Nottingham? We asked.

Nottingham has one of the UK's most genuinely celebrated independent comic shops in Page 45, whose owner has held the title of UK Comics Laureate. So we put six real buyer questions to Claude cold and checked them against live AI-search evidence. Page 45 is exactly as good as its reputation. The bigger finding was what filled out the rest of the list: eight names commonly surface for "best comic shops in Nottingham", and once we checked each one, only two currently have a shop door in Nottingham at all — and only one of those is independent.
Method
On 13 September 2026 we asked six questions someone actually looking for a comic shop in Nottingham might ask. Each was put to Claude (Anthropic), answering cold — no briefing, no search, trained knowledge only, with a cutoff in January 2026 — and then checked against live AI-search evidence: the pages, guides and listings that search-connected assistants actually draw their answers from today.
AI answers vary between runs and between assistants — this is one dated snapshot, not a fixed ranking. We're only claiming what we actually did: we queried Claude directly, and separately checked live web search for the same six questions. We are not claiming to have run ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot directly this time, and we don't quote an engine we didn't actually query.

"Is Chimera, the Beeston comic and games shop, still open?"

Live AI-search evidenceIt isn't, not as a shop you can walk into. Its last day trading from 105 High Road, Beeston was 6 October 2019 — the shop's own announcement said "our lease is up and it is not viable to renew this in these uncertain times," and that it was "relocating to our warehouse in Bilborough, this won't be open to the general public, but you'll still be able to order online from us." That's nearly seven years ago. It still appears as a rated, seemingly-open comic shop in current "best of Nottingham" directory listings.
Verdict: cold recall's honesty about not knowing was the right call. Live search should have closed this gap outright — instead it's the sharpest miss in this whole report: a shop dark to walk-in customers for seven years, still recommended as if you could visit it today.

Verdict: cold recall's silence was correct — there wasn't a second Nottingham name to give, and it said so cleanly. Live search didn't just fail to find one; it actively supplied two real, unrelated businesses from two different counties.

The mentions that put it in Nottingham search results appear to be customers discussing products they bought online or picked up elsewhere, not a local shop.
Verdict: the same pattern as Q4, one region over. Cold recall correctly didn't invent a name; live search supplied a real business with zero physical presence in the town actually being searched.

Of everything named across all six questions, this is the only genuinely independent, currently-trading, walk-in-able comic shop we could confirm actually in Nottingham on 13 September 2026.

The pattern
Across all six questions, the gap wasn't quality — it was geography and time, stacked on top of each other.
Our Glasgow breweries report found two well-known venues that had physically closed months earlier. Our York butchers report found real independents pulled in from up to 30 miles outside the city. Nottingham's comic shops show both problems at once, and worse: of eight names that reliably surface for "best comic shops in Nottingham", one (Chimera) shut its public storefront in October 2019 — nearly seven years ago — and continues to operate only as an online warehouse. Two more (Niche Comics, Retro Hub) are real, well-regarded independent shops with genuine award histories — just in Huntingdon and Rugeley, roughly 30 to 80 miles away, with no Nottingham presence at all. Three more (Tokyo Toys, Travelling Man, Nostalgia & Comics) are real UK chains whose nearest branches are in Birmingham, Glasgow, London, Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle — again, nowhere near Nottingham.
That leaves two names that actually check out as Nottingham shops you can walk into today: Forbidden Planet, a genuine chain branch, and Page 45, the genuine independent. Everything else appears to have been swept in by category-matching rather than location-matching — generic directories and review aggregators tag a business "comic shop" or "manga store" and a loose regional label, and AI search tools that draw on those same directories repeat the pairing without checking whether the shop is actually in the town being asked about, or still has a shop at all.
None of this is any named business's fault. Niche Comics and Retro Hub are, by every account we found, excellent independent shops — just not in Nottingham. Chimera's owners were transparent about their own closure, in public, at the time. The finding is about the listings layer sitting between a real business and an AI's answer: it can keep a shop "open" seven years after its own owners said otherwise, and it can hand a customer a genuinely good recommendation for entirely the wrong town.
