Who does AI recommend for independent florists in Cardiff? We asked.

45% of consumers now ask AI assistants for local business recommendations — up from 6% a year ago (BrightLocal, 2026). Cardiff has genuine floristry roots — a Victorian indoor market that's traded flowers since 1891, family firms with 170-year lineages — so we put six real buyer questions to Claude cold and checked them against live AI-search evidence. The real independents held up well once we found them. The bigger finding was what sat next to them: nationwide, shop-free "letterbox flower" brands ranking in the exact same results as businesses that actually cut and arrange stems in Cardiff.
Method
On 8 September 2026 we asked six questions someone actually choosing a florist in Cardiff might ask. Each was put to Claude (Anthropic), answering cold — no briefing, no search, trained knowledge only — and then checked against live AI-search evidence: the pages, guides and listings that search-connected assistants actually draw their answers from today.
AI answers vary between runs and between assistants — this is one dated snapshot, not a fixed ranking. We're only claiming what we actually did: we queried Claude directly, and separately checked live web search for the same six questions. We are not claiming to have run ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot directly this time, and we don't quote an engine we didn't actually query.
The six questions
For each, here's what Claude said cold, then what live AI-search evidence adds.

"What are the best independent florists in Cardiff?"
Claude · cold, no search"I don't have confident, specific knowledge of individual florist shops trading in Cardiff today. I know the city has a historic Victorian indoor market, and I'd expect florists to trade from it, but I couldn't name a business there with any real confidence."
Live AI-search evidenceReal names surface quickly: Secret Garden Florist, run by sisters from a stall in Cardiff Indoor Market since 2007; Bettys Florists on Cowbridge Road East, an amalgamation of some of Cardiff's oldest floristry names tracing back to 1850; John Henry Flowers in Roath; Flower Lodge in Rhiwbina. Alongside them, the same "best of" pages surface Floom, a marketplace that connects to independent local florists rather than a shop itself, and a scatter of results for an unrelated town called Cardiff-by-the-Sea in California.
Verdict: cold recall's honesty was the right call — it had a reasonable guess about the market but declined to invent a business name. Live search found a genuinely strong local scene, though it took some sorting to separate Cardiff, Wales from Cardiff, California.

"Who does wedding flowers in Cardiff?"

Live AI-search evidenceHearts & Flowers, based in Llanishen, comes up repeatedly for weddings, alongside Petal Power, who work across Cardiff and South Wales more broadly, and Bettys Florists. Wedding-specific directories (Guides for Brides, The Wedding Secret) list all three with venue-decoration experience specifically.
Verdict: a clean gap, filled cleanly. Cold recall had nothing; live search had three named, addressed businesses with wedding-specific track records.

"Where can I get same-day flower delivery in Cardiff from a real local florist, not a national delivery company?"

Live AI-search evidenceGenuinely local options exist and rank: The Market Garden, at a real Cardiff address on Michaelston Road, and Blush Floral Art, both offering same-day delivery if ordered before 2pm through the Flower Shops Network. Floom also partners with independent Cardiff florists for same-day orders before 12pm. But the same search results put Bloom & Wild's "Flower Delivery Wales" page and Clare Florist's Cardiff-targeted landing page at or near the top — neither has a shop in Cardiff.
Verdict: the real local options exist and are findable — but they rank alongside, not above, brands with no Cardiff presence at all. Nothing in the results itself flags the difference.

Live AI-search evidenceConfirmed, and more clear-cut than the hedge above suggests: Bloom & Wild is online-only, founded in 2013, with no retail shops. Flowers are hand-packed centrally and posted nationwide via Royal Mail Tracked or DPD. No florist in Cardiff cuts, arranges or touches the stems — the "Wales flower delivery" page is a national logistics operation wearing a local place name.
Verdict: cold recall's instinct was correct and live search removed all doubt. The company is honest about its own model on its own site — the issue is that AI-search results don't carry that distinction over when they rank it next to an actual Cardiff shop.

"Where's a good florist for funeral flowers in Cardiff?"

Live AI-search evidenceSeveral real Cardiff addresses come up: Hearts and Flowers, Covent Garden Florist on Shirley Road, Bettys Florists, and Allwoods Florist, all offering sympathy tributes with delivery to local funeral directors. One more name in the same results, Nicola Downie Florist, is a genuine, well-reviewed independent — but it's based in Caerphilly, roughly 7 miles north of Cardiff, and its own listing describes serving "Caerphilly, Cardiff, Pontypridd, Gwent and RCT" as a region, not a Cardiff shop specifically.
Verdict: mostly a clean win for live search, with one soft edge — a real, good, independent florist just outside Cardiff surfacing for a Cardiff-specific query without its actual town being made clear upfront.

"Recommend a florist near Cardiff Bay for a same-day gift"

Live AI-search evidenceClare Florist's "Send Flowers to Cardiff Bay, Cardiff" page ranks prominently — but Clare Florist, despite an "About Us" page citing roots back to 1978, relocated its operation to Berkshire in 2024 and now delivers to any UK postcode as a nationwide online florist. There's no Cardiff Bay shop behind the page. The Market Garden and Allwoods Florist — both real, address-verified Cardiff shops — also surface, but lower and less prominently for this specific phrasing.
Verdict: the most striking single result of the six. A page built around the exact phrase "Cardiff Bay" outranks the actual shops that are, in some cases, a genuine walk from the Bay itself.

The pattern
Across all six questions, cold recall had one honest strength and live search had a consistent, specific blind spot.
The strength: cold recall never invented a business, and even offered a correctly hedged instinct that Bloom & Wild has no shops — a detail live search then confirmed outright. The blind spot: live AI-search evidence treats "flower delivery Cardiff" as one flat category, whether the flowers are cut and arranged ten minutes from where you're standing or boxed centrally and posted from outside Wales entirely. Bloom & Wild and Clare Florist are not disguised as local — both are upfront about being nationwide operations on their own sites — but nothing in the AI-search results carries that distinction forward. A page titled "Flower Delivery Wales" or "Send Flowers to Cardiff Bay" reads, in a results list, exactly like a genuine local shop's page.
This is a different distortion from our York butchers piece, where the problem was real independents being geographically stretched. Here it's categorical: two entirely different kinds of business — a market stall with sisters arranging stems since 2007, and a Royal Mail parcel with a Cardiff-flavoured landing page — sit in the same list with no signal to tell them apart. Floom is the interesting middle case: it's also an online marketplace, but one built specifically to route orders to real independent florists who keep control of what they make, which is a genuinely different model from a letterbox-only brand — and worth knowing apart from it.
The genuine Cardiff independents, once sorted from the two blur types, are exactly what you'd hope for a city with a market that's sold flowers since Victorian times: a 2007 sister-run stall in that same market, a 170-year floristry lineage still on Cowbridge Road, and specialists across Llanishen, Roath and Rhiwbina who'll answer the phone from an actual Cardiff shop.

What this means if it's your business
If you're a local florist — or any local business competing against national delivery-only brands for the same search terms — this report is the test worth running on yourself: ask an AI assistant the plainest possible version of "best near me" and check whether your actual shop, with your actual address, is distinguishable from a company that only ships to your town rather than trading in it.
